| Am I Eligible?
If you are eligible to participate in AIM-HIGH – you will be working with expert physicians to improve your heart health AND you will also receive free prescription medicines to improve your cholesterol levels for five years.
All scheduled study visits and study tests (lab work and ECGs) are FREE. Neither you nor your insurance will be charged for any scheduled study visits or procedures.
To take part in the AIM-HIGH study you must speak with your doctor about your heart health and meet ALL of the following conditions:
1. You must be at least 45 years old
2. Your doctor must determine that you have evidence of heart dis ease by seeing if you have:
- History of heart attack or
- Had a previous stroke or
- History of hospitalization for Acute Coronary Syndrome – chest pain due to insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle or
- Test results showing significantly blocked arteries in the heart or brain or the peripheral arteries
3. Your doctor must decide if each of your lipid levels fall within the limits listed below:
- Bad cholesterol or LDL levels <= to 180 mg/dL (4.65mmol/L in Canada)
- Triglycerides greater than 100 mg/dL but < 400 mg/dL (between 1.70 - 4.52mmol/L in Canada
- If you are a man, good cholesterol or HDL less than or equal to 40 mg/dL (1.03mmol/L in Canada)
- If you are a woman, HDL less than or equal to 50 mg/dL (1.29mmol/L)
If you meet all of the conditions above please speak with your doctor about the AIM-HIGH cholesterol management program.
If you are currently taking a statin drug such as Zocor or Lipitor to lower your cholesterol, be sure to tell your doctor. Since these drugs affect your lipid levels your doctor will need to include this information when deciding if you can participate in the AIM-HIGH program.
AIM-HIGH isn’t right for everyone. Some of the reasons you may not be right for this five-year cholesterol management program are:
- If you have had coronary bypass surgery within the past year or a coronary angioplasty within the past month
- If you have a recent history of gout
- If you have uncontrolled diabetes. Your doctor can test your blood sugar levels to see if you can participate in AIM-HIGH.
